The Breaking Point
“I poured myself into building a program from scratch — hand-making materials, rebuilding trust with families, working through constant hostility. I asked for support. I documented concerns. I begged for intervention when safety was at risk. Instead, I was told I didn’t know how to do my job. I reached out to the board. They told me they were disappointed in me. On my last day, I was told that this would never have happened if I had just advocated for myself. All I had been doing was advocating — for my students, for safety, for dignity, for fairness. I loved this work. I still do. But love cannot survive without support.”

Conditional Leadership
“New leadership had been brought in to advance equity and accountability. But once that work began to unsettle long-standing norms, authority became conditional. Oversight structures were created that excluded leaders of color from decision-making — even when policy clearly named their roles. Individuals with no operational experience assumed control. The message was unmistakable: your leadership is provisional. Your authority exists only as long as it does not disrupt comfort.”

The Cost of Naming Inequity
“Efforts to expand access and confront inequity were framed as destabilizing. Requests for accountability were described as divisive. Burnout did not come from the work itself. It came from constantly defending credibility, integrity, and intention in spaces that claimed equity but protected hierarchy. White supremacy did not show up as overt hostility. It showed up in governance decisions. In silence. In who was believed without question — and who was not.”
